LH_low-resIn the conversation about population health management and the transition to value-based care, there’s a significant focus — and rightfully so — on patient engagement. Fostering a trusting relationship between patients and providers, and empowering patients to become actively engaged in improving their health, are keys to producing better outcomes.

Provider organizations also need to make sure their doctors are engaged in this transition.

The physicians at Pennsylvania-based Lehigh Valley Health Network are embracing change, in part because they trust their data.

Dr. Brian Nester, president and CEO of Lehigh Valley, has seen this trust develop firsthand.

Data, according to Nester, is only valuable if your physicians trust it and believe that the insight gained from data can improve the quality of care.

“The question you get from doctors about data is, ‘where’d you get it?’ We are using clinicians every day to help populate the right data elements into the queries that we utilize within our analytics platform to develop strategies.”

“So we connect the insights of our clinicians directly into the initial embedding of the clinical elements that we want to measure.”

Nester credits the upfront and continuing work of gathering physician input as the reason for staff alignment and their ability to tackle tough problems.
